Overview
E130 on a Baxi 600 Combi indicates a flue thermostat (flue temperature sensor) has tripped and the boiler has gone into lockout. The flue thermostat is a safety device that monitors exhaust gas temperature; it trips if the flue temperature is too high or if the sensor detects an abnormal condition that could make combustion unsafe. Causes can include a blocked or restricted flue terminal, a faulty flue thermostat/thermistor, fan or air-pressure issues, or an internal fault on the boiler control electronics. This is a safety-related fault and should be treated seriously. A one-off E130 that clears after a reset and following a simple external check (clearing an obvious blockage) may be resolved by the homeowner, but repeated or persistent lockouts require a Gas Safe registered engineer. Do not bypass safety devices or attempt internal repairs unless you are a qualified gas engineer: incorrect work can create a risk of carbon monoxide, fire, or further damage to the boiler.
Possible Cause: Flue thermostat sensor tripped (lockout)
Troubleshooting Steps
Safety precautions:
1) If you suspect a gas leak or smell gas, leave the property immediately and call the gas emergency number. Do not operate electrical switches, appliances, or phones inside the property.
2) Turn off the boiler at the mains before doing any close inspection. Keep the area ventilated. Do not remove or dismantle the flue or boiler casing — internal work must only be done by a qualified engineer.
3) Never attempt to bypass a lockout or defeat safety devices.
Initial checks a homeowner can do:
1) Note the exact error code display and whether the red lockout light is showing continuously or flashing. This helps the engineer later.
2) Visually inspect the external flue terminal (outside the property). Look for blockages such as leaves, bird nests, other debris, snow or ice, or anything sitting in front of the terminal. Remove obvious external debris if safe to do so from ground level (do not climb or use ladders unless competent and safe).
3) Check for recent cold weather that might have frozen condensate or caused ice at the flue area; if present, thaw gently with warm (not boiling) water poured over the external pipe if accessible and safe.
4) Listen at the boiler when it attempts to run: an unusually noisy or non-spinning fan can indicate a fan fault, which often needs an engineer.
Simple reset procedure (try once only):
1) Follow the boiler’s reset method: if there is a dedicated reset button, press and hold it until the display resets and the red lockout light goes out. If your model uses a selector switch, open the panel and put the switch to R (Reset) for at least 5 seconds then release. Alternatively, turn the boiler off and back on at the control and mains to attempt a restart.
2) After reset, allow the boiler to attempt ignition. If it runs normally and no E130 returns, monitor it for the next few hours/days.
If the fault returns or reset fails:
1) Do not attempt internal repairs. Persistent E130 suggests an underlying issue: blocked/flue restriction that you cannot reach safely, a faulty flue thermostat/thermistor, a fan or air-pressure switch fault, or a PCB/controls problem.
2) Record when the fault happens, any external conditions (heavy rain, snow, bird activity), and any noises. This information helps the engineer diagnose the root cause.
3) Contact a Gas Safe registered engineer. Tell them the boiler model (Baxi 600 Combi), the E130 code, the checks you have done, and whether a reset cleared the fault or if it is persistent. The engineer will inspect/clear the flue safely, test/replace the flue thermostat or fan if required, and carry out combustion and safety checks.
Final notes:
- Do not attempt to remove the flue terminal, open the boiler casing, or replace sensors yourself unless you are a qualified gas engineer.
- Repeated lockouts are a sign that the boiler needs professional attention. Arrange a Gas Safe visit rather than continuing to reset the appliance.
- If you have carbon monoxide alarms, ensure they are working and keep them powered while the boiler is faulting.
