Overview
OFF OFF OFF on a Baxi Solo indicates the boiler has no power to its control/display. In plain terms the unit is completely unresponsive — the control panel is blank and the boiler is not trying to start. This can be caused by a simple external loss of electricity (mains outage, tripped breaker, switched-off isolator), a blown fuse in the fused spur or plug, or a more serious internal electrical fault such as a failed PCB, blown internal fuse or damaged wiring. Severity is moderate: the condition is not normally an immediate safety hazard unless you detect the smell of gas, but you will have no heating or hot water until power is restored. Some checks are safe for a homeowner to do (checking the consumer unit, isolation switch, and thermostat/timers); anything involving opening the boiler, internal fuses, wiring or gas components should be left to a qualified engineer (Gas Safe for gas work, and a registered electrician for wiring faults).
Possible Cause: No power
Troubleshooting Steps
Safety first
- If you smell gas, leave the property immediately, do not operate switches, and call the gas emergency number and a Gas Safe engineer from a safe location.
- If you are not comfortable doing basic electrical checks, stop and call a qualified electrician or Gas Safe engineer.
Initial checks a homeowner can do
1. Check other electrical points in the house so you know whether you have mains power (try a light or socket). If there is a general power cut, contact your electricity supplier.
2. Check the consumer unit (fuse box) for a tripped MCB or RCD. If a breaker has tripped, switch it fully off and then back on. Do not repeatedly reset a breaker that trips immediately.
3. Locate the boiler fused spur / isolator (often a small white switch or small metal box adjacent to the boiler). Make sure it is in the ON position. If it has a replaceable fuse, check that fuse; replace only with the correct type and rating.
4. If the boiler is connected via a plug and socket, check the plug fuse (usually a 3A fuse). Replace a blown plug fuse with the correct rating.
5. Check external controls: programmer/timer, room thermostat and any smart controls. Ensure the programmer is calling for heat and the thermostat set point is above room temperature. Replace thermostat batteries if applicable.
6. Confirm any external isolation switches (immersion heater, additional timers) are on.
Diagnostic steps if the boiler still shows no power
7. Try the boiler reset procedure only if you see signs of power (LEDs or partial display). On Baxi models the reset is usually via the selector switch set to R and held for 5 seconds. If the display is completely blank there is no point attempting reset.
8. Do not remove the boiler case or touch internal components. Internal fuses, wiring, the PCB or the mains input may be faulty and should only be inspected by a qualified person.
When to call a professional
9. Call a Gas Safe registered engineer if: you cannot restore power after the safe checks above, there is any sign of gas smell, or the boiler shows intermittent power. If the boiler’s internal fuse, PCB or gas valve is suspected, Gas Safe engineers will diagnose and repair gas-side and many internal electrical faults.
10. Call a registered electrician if you suspect a household wiring fault (persistent tripping of the consumer unit, no power to the boiler but other circuits OK and the fused spur is fine).
Additional advice
- Do not attempt to bypass any safety devices or work on wiring inside the boiler. That is dangerous and will invalidate warranties and could be illegal for gas work.
- Note details before calling out a technician: boiler model, serial number, exactly what you see (OFF OFF OFF / blank display), and what checks you’ve already performed. This helps the engineer diagnose the fault faster.
- There are no reliable or safe DIY fixes for internal PCB or internal fuse failures; these require a qualified engineer.
If these steps do not restore power, arrange for a qualified Gas Safe engineer and/or electrician to inspect and repair the boiler.
